If the wedding ceremony is happening outside, it makes sense to keep all the guests and family near their seats to gather them together easier for the group shot and family portraits. The downside is sometimes the elements can make the experience a little cold, or more likely, the wind picks up (especially in the afternoon in Colorado) and anyone with long hair will have their hair get messy for photos. Although this isn't ideal, it's better to move more quickly with this part of the day so that it doesn't take the whole cocktail hour to finish. Often inside is already occupied with guests mingling, and once guests get near the bar they might run off to get a drink or use the bathroom. After that happens it's like herding cats to get the right people back together for the portraits, and that's when this process can drag on longer than needed.
